What does it mean to leave one world behind and discover that it continues to live within you?

Elsewhere Within brings together the work of Rosemary Feit Covey and Roya Chadab in a compelling exploration of two deeply intertwined experiences: displacement and assimilation.

Through their distinct visual languages, Covey and Chadab examine what happens to identity when people move between places, cultures, histories, and ways of belonging.

Rosemary Feit Covey’s work confronts the experience of Displacement; the rupture, disorientation, and fragmentation that can accompany being uprooted from a familiar world. Her densely layered compositions evoke bodies in motion, collective memory, and the tension between individuality and belonging. The work suggests a world in which boundaries become unstable and the sense of home is no longer fixed.

Roya Chadab’s Assimilation considers what follows: the gradual, often invisible process of adapting to a new cultural landscape. Assimilation is rarely a simple act of acceptance. It can involve translation, reinvention, compromise, and the negotiation of what is retained and what is altered. Chadab’s work explores the psychological space between preserving one’s origins and becoming part of somewhere else.

Together, the two bodies of work raise questions that extend far beyond migration:

How much of ourselves changes when we enter another world?
What do we carry with us?
What do we leave behind?
And can belonging ever be complete, even after so much time has passed?

Elsewhere Within does not present displacement and assimilation as opposing conditions. Rather, it considers them as interconnected states; an external journey that can ultimately become an internal one.

The exhibition invites viewers to consider the places they have left, the places they have entered, and the versions of themselves that have emerged somewhere in between.
